Six years ago, UWAC launched its women's initiative, A Woman's Purse.
Its vision is that every woman in Adams County, regardless of her age and circumstances, deserves positive understanding, respectful support and equality. The initiative's powerful network of women share their time, talents and treasure with the young women and men of Adams County Children and Youth's Independent Living Program (ILP).
ILP assists young women and men ages 16 to 21 transition from foster care to being self-sufficient. These young people also find permanent connections in their lives and take an active role in developing plans that lead to their independence.
A Woman's Purse supports ILP through two committees: the Transitions Committee tackles specific issues like transportation, tuition or job training, housing and finances; and the Events Committee organizes events designed to raise awareness of the issues and money to benefit the programs, the young people and the initiative.
Our signature event is just around the corner. The Fifth Annual Purse Auction will be held on Friday, February 24, from 5:30 to 10:00 in the Grand Ballroom of the Gettysburg Hotel, and we are grateful to CenturyLink for their signature sponsorship for the event!
There will be live and silent auctions, door prizes, purse raffles, and surprises. We have designer bags--both new and gently used--summer bags, winter bags, leather bags, straw bags...some purses are even filled with goodies. Our auctioneer is Kaila Gaines, a recent graduate of Bermudian Springs and the World Wide College of Auctioneering.
Tickets are $25 per person or $250 for a table of ten. The cost includes a bountiful buffet of bites and desserts and a complimentary glass of bubbly. A cash bar and beverage station will be available throughout the event.
A great handbag is the exclamation point to a woman's ensemble. It not only completes her look, it holds everything she needs to survive. And it always fits!
Last year's auction was a fabulous celebration of women and raised over $12,000 for ILP. The proceeds have paid for tuitions and books, medical necessities, transmissions, car insurance, and housing.
Please plan to join us on February 24. The first four auctions sold out weeks before the event, so get your tickets today!
